Death toll from floods reaches 118, while over 800 injured

Officials said Tuesday that flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains across the country have killed 118 people and injured 812 others this month.  

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the rains and floods affected over five hundred and fifty-four thousand people have been affected.

Over eleven thousand houses have been destroyed and sixteen thousand six hundred and seventy-five partially damaged in all the four provinces.

 

About thirty-six thousand tents and seven thousand seven hundred blankets and food packets have been distributed among affected people.

 

The NDMA spokesman, Brigadier Kamran Zia, said nearly 94 relief camps have been set up to provide food, medicine and accommodation to the flood-affected people.

 

Pakistan started receiving heavy rains in the first week of August and affected most parts of Punjab province. Health experts warned outbreak of epidemic diseases in the affected areas.

 

The NDMA has established 56 relief camps in the province which are accommodating 1,956 people.

Sindh province was also badly affected by the flash floods where 26 people were killed and 26 other injured. The rain-triggered floods affected 159,680 people and washed away 87,388 acres of standing crops.

 

The flash floods destroyed 4,924 houses across the 544 villages of the province which were badly hit by the disastrous rains. The provincial capital of Karachi remained the worst hit area where 16 people were killed and several others injured in separate incidents of electrocution, road accidents and drowning.

 

The NDMA set up 34 relief camps in the flood-hit areas of the province where 2,759 people were accommodated and fed.

 

A total of 24 fatalities have resulted from the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where rain water affected 15 villages. The rains injured 17 people, affected 336 others and destroyed 149 houses.

 

In Balochistan province, 18 people were killed and 17 others injured in separate incidents of rain related accidents. The incessant rains majorly hit 342 villages where 64,270 people were affected. The rain water also destroyed 3,000 houses.

 

The NDMA established four relief camps in the province where 4, 500 people were accommodated.

 

A total of 12 people were killed in separate incidents of roof collapse, drowning and electrocution in the country’s northwest tribal areas. Many connecting bridges and roads were swept away by flood water, paralyzing life of the local people.
