Journalists boycott assembly’s proceedings over case registration
Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 11:42:59 by Tahir KhanJournalists covering the National Assembly on Tuesday boycotted the proceedings over registration of a case against the ARY TV channels for airing footage of attack on the Quaid’s residence in Ziyarat.
The TV had shown the attack of an armed militant group of the residency and disrespecting thee photos of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah last month.
Terrorism charges were inserted in the case filed against the ARY Balochistan and its officials in Karachi and Islamabad.
Commenting on the journalists’ boycott, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid told the National Assembly that the FIR has been registered on the directives of Balochistan High Court.
He said that he has spoken to the Balochistan Chief Minister and discussed the issue who will send him the related documentation. He assured the House that after consultations with media organizations and journalists‚ he will resolve the issue.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan informed the House that all political parties including PML-N are on the same page as far as freedom of expression and information is concerned.
He said independent media is important component of the democracy and assured that the report on the basis of which the FIR has been registered will be presented in the House.
The opposition members staged a token walkout from the House on this issue.
