PM summons special cabinet meet on Karachi’s violence
Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 3:55:42 by Tahir KhanPrime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday took notice of worsening law and order situation in Karachi‚ and said situation in Karachi is a matter of grave concern and all stakeholders should sit together to devise a joint strategy to check the situation.
Presiding over the cabinet meeting, Nawaz Sharif said peace in Karachi is vital for the entire because of being the economic hub.
He directed to convene a special meeting of the Cabinet to discuss law and order situation in Karachi and finalize a strategy to restore peaces there.
The Prime Minister said Sindh governor‚ chief minister Sindh‚ high officials including DG ISI‚ DG Intelligence Bureau‚ DG rangers and IG police Sindh should attend the meeting.
MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar also met the Prime Minister in Islamabad and discussed the situation in Karachi.
The meeting took place a day after the MQM chief Altaf Hussain demanded deployment of troops in Karachi to ensure peace.
The opposition PPP, PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami and the government opposed the proposal.
Meanwhile DG Rangers Major General Rizwan Akhtar said in the Supreme Court on Wednesday that militant wings of political parties are responsible for the ongoing violence in the city.
The DG Rangers appeared before the apex court’s Karachi registry after the Chief Justice ordered his appearance.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry headed the five-member bench, which also comprises Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, as its members.
The DG Rangers said the political parties were receiving “Fitrana” during Ramazan and the situation was calm in the city but as the money has stopped coming in, the political parties are creating problems.
He further said that violence increases as soon as political workers are released from police custody on bail.
Issuing remarks on the comments made by the DG Rangers, the chief justice questioned who will terminate the militant wings.
The proceedings are based on a suo motu notice taken by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry after the city went through one of its bloodiest summers in August 2011.
The five-judges had passed a detailed judgment which contained various orders and directions on how to control lawlessness in the port city.
