US has evidence of Syrian regime’s chemical weapons use

The United States has released a detailed, unclassified version of the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment of the use of chemical weapons in the suburbs of Damascus, Syria on August 21.

This assessment provides clear and compelling evidence of the Syrian government’s responsibility for these horrific actions.

“We provide a link to the complete text of the assessment and a map at the end of this release,” the US said in a statement on Saturday.

Secretary Kerry has also delivered remarks about the crisis in Syria, underscoring the clear responsibility of the Syrian regime for this incident and the importance of holding the Syrian government accountable for its violation of this bedrock international prohibition against the use of chemical weapons, a norm which dates back to World War I.

This attack against the Syrian government’s own citizens was, in the words of Secretary Kerry, a moral obscenity.

The United States respects and supports the work of the UN team which has gathered additional evidence of the regime’s use of chemical weapons and their lethal effect on hundreds of civilians, but it is already very clear that the Asad government conducted this attack.  The regime must be held accountable for these actions.

The United States joins the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and many others in publicly condemning the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons, and urges the international community to join in collective action to hold the Syrian regime accountable for these brutal and inhuman actions against their own people.
