Prime Minister arrives in Karachi to discuss ‘targeted operation’
Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013 10:43:44 by Tahir KhanPrime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi on Tuesday on a two-day visit to discuss options for restoration of peace and the proposed ‘targeted operation’ against the miscreants in the port city.
Nearly 1200 people have been killed in firing incidents in Karachi this year, the Human Right Commission of Pakistan says in its latest report.
There is no let up in the violence and innocent people are killed almost daily and the law enforcement agencies are failed to eliminate miscreants.
Nawaz Sharif will preside over several meetings including the federal cabinet, to explore ways to end violence which has badly affected business in Karachi, commercial center of the country. He will also meet traders and people belonging to different schools of thought to seek their suggestions for peace.
He will hold meetings with the Sindh political leadership including provincial Governor‚ Chief Minister‚ heads of security agencies and business community leaders to finalize a strategy to bring peace to Karachi and give a boost to the national economy.
Nawaz Sharif will chair a special cabinet meeting in Karachi on Wednesday to focus on flushing out criminal elements from the city through a targeted operation, officials said.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will submit a report on law and order situation in Karachi along with recommendations to restore peace in the city, they said.
The Prime Minister was given a comprehensive briefing in Islamabad on Monday on overall law and order situation of the country particularly Karachi.
The gov’t plans a targeted operation and has won support from the political parties. Suggestion for a military operation has been opposed by the gov’t and major parties.
