D-8 countries’ PTA will be operationalized soon

Secretary General D-8 Organization Seyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi has said that Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) among D-8 (Developing-Eight) countries will be operationalized very soon.

Talking to media in Islamabad on Wednesday‚ he said that November 1‚ 2013 has been set as the cutoff date for the implementation of Preferential Trade Agreement. Mousavi said that all the member countries are working to finalize the offer list.

Talking about the outcome of the Commission’s meeting in Islamabad‚ he said the member states held very intensive consultations on the roadmap‚ strategy‚ annual budget and the structural reforms of the organization.

He expressed the hope that D-8 is going to activate first ever Energy Forum in Pakistan in the near future. He said the Commission’s meeting will prove a turning point in this regard.

He said that D-8 organization is very active in tapping five areas on priority basis including trade and industry‚ agriculture‚ energy‚ transportation and culture.

The secretary general said D-8 is also looking to enhance cooperation in exchange of cultural activities. He hoped that very soon D-8 will hold a conference for the promotion of culture and art.

Earlier‚ he visited Pakistan National Council of Arts and visited various galleries displaying the paintings and sculptures of Pakistani artists. He appreciated the calligraphic and sculpture work.

D-8 delegation also held a meeting with Additional Secretary Information‚ Broadcasting and National Heritage Mohammad Azam. Both the sides discussed the possible avenues of cooperation among D-8 countries. Senior officials of the ministry also attended he meeting.

The D-8 commissioners from member countries (Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey) and D-8 Secretary-General Dr Mousavi are attending the two-day meeting.
