Two gunmen, riding a motorcycle, sprayed bullets at the car of the Navy officer in the busy Karsaz neighbourhood near Pakistan’s Navy headquarters, a police officer said.
The officer died at the scene while his wife was injured in the attack. She was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The gunmen fled after the incident. No group claimed responsibility.
Navy officials and police arrived at the scene and removed the red-color private car of the slain officer.
Navy security officials say they are investigating motives behind the incident.
The incident occurred at a time when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is in Karachi and Wednesday presided over a meeting of senior security officials on restoration of peace in the city.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says that nearly 1800 people were killed in targeted attacks in Karachi in the first six months this year.
