Monday, September 16th, 2013 12:36:10 by Tahir KhanThe Afghan election commission on Monday kicked off the registration process of candidates for the coming presidential polls, officials said.
“The Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) formally began the nomination process for candidates of the upcoming presidential and provincial councils elections on Monday Sept. 16, 2013,” the IEC said in a press release.
According to the release, the registration for candidates of provincial councils also began on the same day.
It said the would-be candidates for presidential elections should meet the registration site, locating in the main IEC compound in eastern Kabul, adding that the would-be candidates for provincial councils should go to the IEC offices in provincial level to register their names.
According to the election timeline prepared by the election body, the nomination process will end on Oct. 6 before the verification of candidate nomination.
The third presidential and provincial council elections, since the fall of Taliban regime in late 2001, is slated for April 5 next year.
So far several politicians and influential Afghans have shown interest in contesting the upcoming historic polls.
The Afghan government has already got preparation to beef up security for the coming elections. The voter registration process is going on across the war-torn country.
Insecurity and difficult terrain in part of the mountainous country, where the election materials is difficult to be carried, remain the main challenges for the polls, according to IEC officials.
