Indian PM Manmohan Singh confirms meeting with Nawaz Sharif
Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 10:36:14 by Tahir KhanIndian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has confirmed his meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Before his departure for the United States to attend the UN General Assembly session in New York‚ Manmohan Singh said in New Delhi Wednesday that he looks forward to meeting with his Pakistani counterpart in New York.
The two leaders will meet on September 29.
Indian Media has reported this will be the first meeting between the two leaders since the chill in ties following the escalations on the Line of Control and the killing of five Indian soldiers on August 6.
“During my visit to New York, I also look forward to bilateral meetings with the leaders of some of our neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan,” said Singh in a statement before leaving for the 68th United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
Manmohan Singh’s special envoy Satinder Lambah met his Pakistani counterpart Shahryar Khan in Dubai a couple of weeks ago to discuss the agenda of the meeting.
There have been meetings between Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan as well as Pakistan’s National Security Advisor and Foreign Affairs Advisor.
The Indian Prime Minister will hold talks with the US President Barack Obama on September 27 and implementation of the civil nuclear deal, ways to expand cooperation in the fields of defence, security and economic issues will be high on the agenda of the meeting, NDTV reported.
The Prime Minister is also expected to hold discussions on combating terrorism, disarmament, UN reforms and development.
