Nawaz Sharif for new global partnership

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called for a renewed and strengthened global partnership that should be beyond official development assistance and be based on market access, transfer of new technologies, climate finance and domestic resource mobilization.

In his statement to the High Level Event on reviewing the progress made in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) he called upon businesses, private foundations, international organizations, civil society and parliaments to step forward to form global partnerships to implement sustainable development agenda.

Reviewing the status of MDGs in Pakistan, the Prime Minister stated that despite resource constraints his Government was committed to further reducing the incidence of poverty.

He informed the General Assembly of his decision to significantly increase spending on education and health sectors. Referring to the recent earthquake, the Prime Minister underlined that Pakistan was prone to natural disasters and has, therefore, launched a ten year National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy.

The Prime Minister met with the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa  and underscored the importance that Pakistan attaches to its relations with Sri Lanka which are characterized by cordiality and friendship.

The Prime Minister stated that he looked forward to his participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Governments meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Sri Lanka in November 2013.

The Sri Lankan President thanked Pakistan for its support to Sri Lanka in the latter’s fight against terrorism and then at international forums.

He invited Pakistani investors to invest in Sri Lanka especially in the sugar industry.

The Prime Minister also met with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and expressed his desire of promoting and further strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in economic cooperation.

 The Emir of Qatar underscored the importance that his country attaches to its relations with Pakistan. He noted the valuable contribution made by overseas Pakistanis living in Qatar for the development of the country.

The two leaders agreed that the close political bilateral relations need to be transformed into mutually beneficial economic partnership.

Discussions focused in particular on cooperation in the energy and power sectors, including LNG. The two leaders expressed the confidence that mutually beneficial economic, commercial and investment cooperation between the two countries will further bring the people of two countries closer.
