Pakistan seeks peaceful use of nuclear technology, opposes arms race

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said Pakistan is committed to peaceful use of nuclear energy and does not want an arms race in South Asia.

Addressing UN Disarmament Conference in New York‚ he said the international community should do away with discriminatory nuclear policy as it has harmed the world peace.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s nuclear policy is guided by principles of restraint and responsibility.

He called for Pakistan’s inclusion in all export control regimes as well as nuclear suppliers group.

Nawaz Sharif said energy shortage is one the most serious issues facing Pakistan. He said we require energy from all sources and qualify to have full access to civil nuclear technology for peaceful purpose.

“We have the expertise‚ manpower and infrastructure to produce civil nuclear energy.”

Meanwhile talking to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud-Al-Faisal in New York‚ the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan wants to further broaden and deepen the existing bilateral political‚ economic‚ defence and cultural ties with the Kingdom.

He said Pakistan attaches great importance to its special relations with Saudi Arabia as they are marked by common perceptions on all issues of mutual interest.

The Saudi Foreign Minister said that his country regards Pakistan as a highly important country of the Islamic world.

He said he looked forward to a rejuvenated Pakistan under the dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The two leaders also discussed regional and international developments.

Stressing the importance of unity among Muslim countries‚ the Prime Minister underscored the need for evolving an effective mechanism to resolve differences and conflicts in the Muslim world.

The Secretary-General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)‚ Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also called on the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and commended the positive role” of Pakistan in the Muslim world and the organization’s activities.

He also appreciated Pakistan’s presidency of the Standing Committee on Science and Technology and proposed the holding of World Science Summit at an early date.

Talking to the NATO Secretary General‚ Anders Fogh Rasmussen‚ Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing peace and stability in the region‚ particularly in Afghanistan.

He underlined his government’s full support to an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process in the shared goal of a comprehensive reconciliation.

The NATO Secretary General appreciated Pakistan’s support in facilitating the transit cargo to and from Afghanistan through its Ground Lines of Communications.
