UN chief lauds Pakistan peace efforts
Saturday, September 28th, 2013 2:36:33 by Tahir KhanSecretary General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki-moon has expressed his deep sense of satisfaction over his recent highly successful visit to Pakistan.
Talking to Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, in New York he commended the positive and constructive role being played by Pakistan in the United Nations, particularly as the largest troop contributing country to UN peacekeeping operations.
The Secretary General expressed appreciation for these peace initiatives.
The Prime Minister thanked the Secretary General for his support to democracy in Pakistan.
He also briefed him on his initiatives to improve relations with India and to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan.
In the context of discussions on UN’s development agenda, particularly the social sector, the Prime Minister stated that his government was committed to achieving MDGs and allocating more resources for the health and education sectors.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif also met Turkish President Abdullah Gul in New York on the sidelines of the 68th session of UN General Assembly.
The Prime Minister said his government is committed to take Pakistan’s strategic partnership with Turkey to new heights through tangible economic cooperation between the two countries.
He also briefed the Turkish President on his initiatives to create a peaceful neighborhood in South Asia.
The Turkish President said his country attached high importance to its relation with Pakistan and would like to deepen these relations particularly in the economic field.
He said he would encourage Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan particularly in infrastructure and energy sectors.
