Seven die in second major jolts parts of Balocistan in five days
Saturday, September 28th, 2013 1:28:04 by Tahir KhanSeven people died in major earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, on Saturday that was the second powerful earthquake in the region in less than a week, the county’s seismological officials said.
The Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Tauseef Alam said that the earthquake shook areas in Balochistan province. It was 47 km deep and its epicenter was in Khuzdar in Balochistan.
Deputy Commissioner Awaran District Rashid Baloch said several houses have collapsed in Noak Joe village of Mashkay area due to the earthquake.
He said teams have been sent to the village to carry out the rescue activities. He said local people and administration are retrieving the people from the rubble.
Rashid Baloch said the earthquake has badly disrupted the communication infrastructure in the area.
According to US Geological Service the quake was of magnitude 6.8 at a depth of 14.8km and struck 96km southwest of Awaran, the area worst affected by the Tuesday’s powerful earthquake.
The areas where tremors were felt included Quetta‚ Khuzdar‚ Awaran‚ Kech‚ Pangur‚ Jaffarabad‚ Naseerabad‚ Chaghi‚ Dera Allah Yar‚ Dalbandi and Kashmore in Balochistan and Karachi. Larkana and Shahdad Kot in Sindh.
The earthquake lasted about 8 to 10 seconds, officials said. They said it was a new earthquake and was not aftershock of the Tuesday’s powerful tremours.
The Balochistan Assembly session was adjourned for five minutes and members went out of the building as tremors jolted Quetta, the provincial capital.
The previous 7.6 powerful earthquake in parts of Balochistan killed nearly 400 people and affected around three hundred thousands people.
