Bollywood Sanjay Dutt gets parole for 14 days on medical grounds
Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 12:22:43 by Tahir KhanIndian film Actor Sanjay Dutt was on Tuesday granted a two-week parole by Yerawada Jail authorities on account of medical reasons, Indian media reported.
Dutt had sought a month’s parole in mid-August to get medical treatment for certain illnesses that he has been suffering from.
Reports say the actor has already left the jail.
Currently serving a 42-month sentence for his role in the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Dutt left Pune for Mumbai and is expected to reach home later in the afternoon. The actor had illegal arms in his possession.
Dutt had surrendered before a Special TADA Court in Mumbai in May and was later shifted to Pune to serve the remainder of his jail term.
His earlier application demanding a 30-day parole had been rejected by Pune Police.
Last week, the jail authorities called off the much awaited cultural programme in which Dutt was to take to the stage citing security concerns.
The jail authorities further indicated that due to security concern now the fund raiser may be held within the jail premises.
The Bollywood star, who is lodged in Yerawada jail since May this year, was to join other inmates to perform a play for the fund-raising cultural programme for the jail staff and their families.
The prison authorities have cancelled a play that Sanjay Dutt was supposed to act in.
A furlough is a leave of absence from prison granted to a prisoner by the jail authorities and differs from a parole that is granted by the court.
In August this year, the actor had taken a parole for treatment.
The Supreme Court had in March this year upheld his conviction under the Arms Act but reduced the six years to five.
He had already served a-year-and-half behind the bars before the apex court’s judgement and is undergoing the remaining sentence of 42 months.
Dutt was sent to Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai on May 16 after he surrendered before a designated TADA court and was shifted to Yerawada prison six days later.
