Japan Raises the Rhetoric in the Island Row with China
Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 2:13:52 by Ahmad MehdiJapan’s defence minister Itsunori Onodera has once again fired a salvo at China saying that its behavior over disputed East China Sea islands is jeopardizing peace in the region.
The islands which are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, and are also claimed by Taiwan, have been the boon of tension between the two economic giants in the last few years. It was only in 2012, when the prospect of an all out war became realistic, after three of the privately owned islands were bought by the Japanese government.
The tensions have arisen in the recent days after Japan blamed China for increasing their military activity in the area.
Last week, Japan reportedly scrambled fighter jets three times after what it claimed were persistent airspace violations from China.
According to Mr. Onodera “the intrusions by China in the territorial waters around the Senkaku islands fall in the ‘grey zone’ [between] peacetime and an emergency situation”.
The situation has not been helped by the rather provocative comments of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has been rooting for shooting down unmanned Chinese aircrafts.
China have since hit back through its defence ministry spokesperson.
