American scientists come up with experimental RSV vaccine
Friday, November 1st, 2013 1:26:39 by Ahmad MehdiReportedly US scientists have been able to produce a vaccine against a deadly childhood virus called the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). However the vaccine against the most fatal children-affecting virus after malaria is still in its experimental stages.
The RSV virus leads to inflamed airways in very young children and results pneumonia, which can be fatal in severe cases.
Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said, “Many common diseases of childhood are now vaccine-preventable, but a vaccine against RSV infection has eluded us for decades.”
“This work marks a major step forward,” he further added, after animal testing has shown positive results.
After the successful animal trials, the vaccine is being prepared for human trials, which will lead to large-scale production after the necessary approvals.
If this vaccine works and makes its way to the market, it can save a lot of young babies from the lethal virus.
