At least six people have died after an over boarded tourist ferry sank near the tourist resort of Pattaya in eastern Thailand. According to the initial reports, the ferry which embarked off Lan Island en-route to Pattaya had 200 people on board and sank after experiencing engine problems at nearly 11:00 GMT.

The dead include three locals, two Russians and a Chinese tourist. Another Russian boy has been admitted to the hospital in critical state. Rescue efforts started immediately after the incident and many people are still believed to be trapped inside.

According to police Col Suwan Cheawnavinthavat,

“Witnesses said there were neither enough tubes nor life vests on the ferry. Some of those who cannot swim had to cling onto coolers or ice containers until rescuers came,”

Police are also conducting investigation with the captain of the ship to ascertain more details.
