Eight dead in Philippine after government warehouse wall falls
Wednesday, November 13th, 2013 4:59:09 by Ahmad MehdiAccording to reports from Tacloban, eight people died after being crushed under a wall as a huge crowd rushed a government warehouse for food supplies.
While thousands have died in Tacloban city in the Philippine province of Leyte due to typhoon Haiyan, thousands more are suffering food and water shortages as aid and rescue efforts lag behind.
“One wall of our warehouses collapsed and eight people were crushed and killed instantly,” said Rex Estoperez of the National Food Authority.
The incident took place in Alangalang town which is around 10 miles away from Tacloban.
According to other reports, the people in Tacloban are in dire need of help and essential supplies as wide-spread panic and looting ensued. Thousands have been trying desperately to leave the area and even the airports are severely crowded and short on supplies.
While the Philippine President believes around 2,500 people have lost their lives due to the typhoon, the UN estimates 10,000 dead.
The authorities have admittedly been overwhelmed by the number of deaths as Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras shared that they ran out of body bags to recover the dead.
“The reason the body recovery stopped is because we ran out of body bags. But we now have 4,000 bags. I am not saying the casualties are 4,000. We are making sure there is an oversupply,” he stated.
