Iraq violence and bombings claim 23 lives as pilgrims gather for Ashura

Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki has been forced by domestic unrest and violence to seek America’s help to deal with militancy in the country which has grown out of control.
Wednesday’s bombings mainly hit the northern and western areas of Baghdad, which sees huge masses of pilgrims gather for prayers and commemoration.
Three planned bombs went off in the outskirts of Baquba, which is considered among the most violent localities in the capital. The bombs resulted in 8 dead and 25 injured as security and medical teams responded.
Ashura this year will end on Thursday and millions of people from Iraq and across the world visit their holy places for prayers. Processions are common and tents are set up to distribute food and water as pilgrims aim to reach Karbala, where the revered shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) is located.
