Pentagon Chief Warns Pakistan PM about NATO Supply Route Issues
Tuesday, December 10th, 2013 12:36:34 by Ahmad MehdiAccording to reports, Chuck Hagel, who had a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday, warned him over the security issues concerning NATO supply route through the country and how they can lead to US assistance being withheld.
A defense official who spoke on the condition on anonymity shared, “There will be those home back in Congress… who will seize upon this issue if it continues to be a concern.”
The US has long been supporting Pakistan by providing military aid and assistance like ‘coalition support funds’ for the country’s role in the war against terrorism.
“The secretary made the point that we need to demonstrate the continued flow of goods in order to be able to continue fulfilling their reimbursements,” the defense official further said.
NATO and the US forces mainly use the Torkham gate route to move military hardware from neighbouring Afghanistan ahead of the planned withdrawal of the forces by 2015.
The Pentagon chief visited Pakistan to initiate a constructive dialogue with the country’s new Prime Minister, who will be involved in making crucial security decisions. The two discussed Pak-US defense collaboration, bilateral ties and the need for stability in the region.
