Study says Pak-India Nuclear War Could Kill 2 Billion People
Tuesday, December 10th, 2013 11:59:53 by Ahmad MehdiInternational Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and Physicians for Social Responsibility released a report back in April of 2012, predicting one billion casualties if there was a nuclear war in South Asia. An updated report however raised the estimate to over 2 billion, given how China is also going to be affected.
“A billion people dead in the developing world is obviously a catastrophe unparalleled in human history. But then if you add to that the possibility of another 1.3 billion people in China being at risk, we are entering something that is clearly the end of civilization,” remarked Helfand, the report’s author.
Pakistan and India were the focus of the report due to the long-standing tensions between the neighbouring countries since partition in 1947. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence and are widely considered as traditional rivals.
However, the impact of a nuclear war in South Asia is not locally limited and according to the report America’s corn and soybean production will also see a huge reduction. China is one of the major countries to be hit by such a conflict, and their own wheat and rice production will suffer drastically.
The report suggests that the abolition of nuclear weapons is the only solution to such drastic scenarios.
