Judge Halts Execution of Bangladeshi Opposition Leader
Wednesday, December 11th, 2013 6:51:57 by Ahmad MehdiIt was reported from Dhaka that the appeals division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court is rethinking about the death sentence which was given to the country’s opposition leaders. The judge halted the execution at the last minute so he can review the case thoroughly.
Abdul Quader Mollah was convicted of war crimes, and his execution was scheduled for early hours of Wednesday. However, lawyers went to the home of justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and deemed it necessary to postpone the death penalty.
The defence lawyer Sazzad Ali Chowdhury said:
“We have got that order. It gives us time to file a petition which the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division was reviewing on Wednesday.”
The execution is going to be the first in the special trials which began under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back in 2010.
Mollah’s Jamaat-e-Islami party released a statement claiming that the execution is going to have dire consequences.
The party also stated that this execution is going to complicate things severely and this will most definitely damage the critical political situation of Bangladesh. A non-party caretaker has been demanded by the opposition in order to take care of the elections.
The government, however, has rejected that demand and has stated that a political government headed by Hasina is going to conduct the elections.
