Monday, December 16th, 2013 9:15:54 by Ahmad MehdiThe current Wimbledon Champion, Andy Murray, was voted as BBC’s sports personality for the year 2013. This is the 60th time this award is being given out by BBC and they have chosen the British national, Andy Murray, who managed to bring home the Wimbledon title this year.
Murray is the first British tennis player who has managed to win the trophy in the past 77 years. That is the reason why Murray has managed to win the hearts of many British nationals.
There was a long drought in the British sport as they have not won a single trophy in the past many years. However, Andy Murray was on his toes as the final took place in Wimbledon and he took on Novak Djokovic.
Even though many thought that Djokovic is going to give a tough competition to the star British player, he was unable to live up to that promise. Andy Murray was able to win the first two sets and was able to lift the trophy on the night.
Andy Murray was presented with the BBC award on Sunday night in Florida. However, the award was received by the 18-time grand slams singles winner, Martina Navratilova. He could not make it to the ceremony due to some training commitments.
While receiving his award, Murray said:
“No matter how excited I try to sound my voice still sounds incredibly boring. But I’m actually incredibly excited right now. That’s just my voice. I’m sorry.”
