Dr. Shakil Afridi’s retrial petition discharged – FATA Tribunal send the case back to FCR

The doctor who helped CIA track Osama Bin Laden, much to the wrath of Pakistan, faced yet another blow on Wednesday, when a FATA Tribunal comprising of Shah Waliullah, Akbar Khan and Pir Fida rejected his appeal for a new trial and re-directed the case to Frontier Crime Regulation (FCR).

Raising ambiguities in Dr. Shakil Afridi’s case, the tribunal asserted that it failed to mention whether the trial of the case would be conducted by the Session Judge or Political Administration.

Afridi was arrested by the Pakistani Intelligence Authorities on May 22, 2011 in Peshawar and was subsequently sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs0.3 million on charges of colluding with Lashkar-e-Islam, a terrorist organization. The doctor did help the American catch Laden, but caused irreparable damage to polio vaccination scheme which he used to track Bin Laden.

There have been many US appeals for the release of Afridi, but it seems unlikely that the Pakistanis will release a man whom they consider a traitor.
