US Drone Kills 3 in North Waziristan
Thursday, December 26th, 2013 9:37:37 by Ahmad MehdiIt was reported from Miranshah that a US drone strike targeted a militant compound and killed at least three in the tribal region near the Afghan border.
The attack took place late on Wednesday night in the Qutub Khel village, which is located five kilometres south of Miranshah, the main town in the Waziristan region.
Sources spoke to AFP regarding the situation and stated:
“A US drone fired two missiles on a militant compound, killing at least three suspected insurgents.”
A security official in Peshawar also confirmed the causalities that took place after the attack. However, sources sitting in Miranshah stated that the death toll is four while the other militant is seriously injured.
Even though the people who have died have not been identified, sources claim that they all were originally from Afghanistan.
North Waziristan is Pakistan’s semi-autonomous region which Washington believes is the hub of Taliban and Al Qaeda militants.
On the other hand, Pakistan has always criticized the drone attacks and believes they violate the country’s sovereignty. Moreover, Pakistan is also of the opinion that drone attacks are counterproductive towards anti-terrorist efforts.
Last month a drone attack killed up to six people and since then Pakistan has always spoken against it. The recent announcement by the UN stated that US should stop these drone attacks but this has not happened so far.
