Heavy snowfall holds citizens hostage in upper areas of Pakistan
Tuesday, December 31st, 2013 12:32:47 by Hunain NaseerIn the current cold wave going through the country, heavy snowfall in upper areas like Malakand, Gilgit and Azad Kashmir has led to blockage of link roads, stopping all activity and relegating people to their homes.
The plains of Punjab are not free from the severity of this cold wave either as temperatures dropped to record lows of this season in the current wave. Some cities, incluing Sialkot and Jhang also witnessed rainfall which further led to normal life being disrupted by the harsh weather.
Upper areas of Pakistan have long been popular tourist destinations and areas like Kalam, Malam Jabba, Chitral, Shangla, Diamar, Ghazar and Gilgit have been receiving snowfall recently. The snow which has now accumulated has blocked all roads in the areas and people are finding it difficult to get around.
Other areas where snowfall is causing difficulties include Batoga top, Nayat Valley, Babusar, Chilas, Azad Kashmir, Athmuqam, Kail and Neelum valley.
According to the meteorological department, the current cold wave experienced throughout the country is the coldest of this season and is expected to continue for a couple more days. Temperatures in most areas of Punjab have also hit this season’s record lows and even Karachi is experiencing a relatively cold winter this time.
