List of countries with weak nuclear material security was released by a US-based think tank known as 2014 Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Nuclear Materials Security. According to this list, India ranks far below Pakistan and China in terms of securing its nuclear assets.
Out of the 25 countries who currently have weapons-usable nuclear materials, India is placed 23rd in terms of securing these materials. Sources claim that out of a total 100 points, India only received 41. Their score in 2012 was 40.
In comparison, China managed to receive 64 points, which takes them to 20th place. On the other hand, Pakistan managed to take 46 points, which places them 22nd.
India, China and Pakistan have all improved their scores since 2012. China scored 63 back in 2012, while India scored 40. On the other hand, Pakistan’s new regulations for the physical protection of nuclear facilities helped them earn a better score than last time as well.
India’s score in terms of international legal commitments was higher than Pakistan because they have signed and adopted all the relevant treaties. However, Pakistan was able to score higher in terms of number of areas.
India is currently lacking the establishment of an independent nuclear regulatory agency.
