Whatmore was also the coach of Sri Lanka back in 1996, when they managed to win the Cricket World Cup. While talking about how he feels after leaving the Pakistani team as a coach, Whatmore said:
“(I am) absolutely delighted, it´s a satisfying win… and a perfect gift the boys have given me on my departure. I am leaving on a very happy note.”
He also spoke about the possibility of returning as a Pakistani coach. While addressing the media, Whatmore said:
“I am leaving the Pakistan Cricket Board on amicable terms, but it´s not a case of leaving Pakistan and not wanting ever to come back. I am sure that I will be back in different capacity, sooner rather than later. I will always look forward to coming back to Pakistan.”
