When Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka pinned Spanish great Rafael Nadal to win his first ever Grand Slam Sunday night, he became the first man ever to beat both Novak Djockovic and Nadal enroute to winning a slam, and hours after the famous win, the ‘other’ Swiss was still coming to terms with what he had achieved.

“I never expected to win a Grand Slam because, for me, I was not good enough to beat those guys,” said Wawrinka.

The win has seen him lunge to the number three spot in the ATP tennis ranking, above Andy Murray, David Ferrer and his compatriot and long time friend Roger Federer.

“To win a Slam, to be number three [in the rankings], both for me is a big surprise,” said Wawrinka. “But I think more so to win a Slam, because in the ranking you can be number three without winning a Slam. But now both are happening, so it’s a big surprise.”

The magnitude of what Stanislas has achieved can e gauged by the fact that he is the first man, outside the big four of Federer, Nadal, Novak and Andy, since Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in 2009, to have won a Grand Slam.
