Taliban Could Attack Tourists in Northern Areas
Wednesday, January 29th, 2014 11:24:09 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Islamabad that Taliban might be planning attacks on the tourists which visit the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Last year 10 foreigners were massacred and the incident is still quite fresh in the minds of the people.
Several tourists travel to Gilgit and Baltistan during their vacations. The mountains, glaciers and the second highest peak in the world, K2, is present in these areas and they provide quite a site for these tourists, attracting them to visit Pakistan despite the current security conditions.
Most recently a militant attack took place in recent weeks and now officials are warning about another attack which might take place in the Northern Areas. A senior officer of the Gilgit-Baltistan administration was interviewed and while talking about the security conditions he said,
“The interior ministry has officially informed Gilgit-Baltistan that the Pakistani Taliban can strike the region. The interior ministry warned of suicide bombings and attacks on tourists in the region.”
Last year when the attack on the foreign mountaineers took place, the Pakistani tourism industry dealt a major blow. That incident took place on the second highest peak in Pakistan, the Nanga Parbat.
It was the deadliest assault on any foreigners in the last decade.
