Taliban Cleric Shot Dead in Quetta
Thursday, January 30th, 2014 3:45:28 by Ahmad MehdiIt was reported from Quetta that an extremely influential cleric who supported Taliban in their war was shot dead in the South-Western city of Quetta.
While addressing the media, senior police officer, Abdul Razzaq, said, “Two unknown gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead Maulana Abdullah Zakiri as he was on his way to a mosque on Wednesday night.”
Despite the fact that Razzaq and Zakiri were living in the same city for several years, they had no disputes amongst each other. However, his family has already accused the Afghan agency for this murder.
The killing of this Taliban cleric was later confirmed by the provincial home secretary, Asad Gilani.
A source in the Afghan Taliban stated that Zakiri was an 80-year-old teacher who worked as a spiritual leader for Mullah Omar.
While talking about Zakiri, Abdul Sattar Chishti said,
“We believe that Afghan intelligence is behind the murder of Maulana Zakiri as they have been killing Afghan religious scholars in the past also.”
Zakiri came to Quetta from Kandahar, the spiritual birthplace of most Taliban. Despite being a part of Kandahar, Zakiri did not become a part of their government which ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001. However, he became an important supporter of Jihad against US-led Nato troops.
