Hyderabad: PPP Leader Chairs Illegal Jirga to Decide Murder Case
Friday, January 31st, 2014 10:09:16 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Hyderabad that a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader, Mohammad Khan Jonejo, was the chair of an illegal jirga which took place within the city and it was to decide a double murder case.
Recently an incident took place within the city where a boy and a girl were killed because they were both involved in a love marriage. Therefore, the girl’s siblings decided to shoot them both dead. In order to sort out this double murder case, Mohammad Khan Jonejo was summoned to head the jirga.
After thoroughly listening to the case and fully understanding the dynamics of the situation, it was decided that the accused, who belonged to the girl’s family, were to be charged 2.5 million each.
On the other hand, since the boy’s family took the girl without her family’s permission, they were also charged with a 600,000 fine.
Several law enforcing agencies claim that it is illegal to hold jirgas in order to sort out cases as they believe that people should approach actual courts if they want a final decision on a particular case. However, when Mohammad Khan Jonejo was interviewed regarding the fact that he headed a jirga, the Pakistan People’s Party leader claimed that it was their right to hold such a gathering as it helped them reach a final conclusion upon the matter.
