PEMRA Chairman Stripped of Powers
Saturday, February 1st, 2014 9:45:57 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Islamabad that the chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Chaudhry Rashid Ahmad, has been stripped of his powers.
A three-member committee is currently overseeing the affairs at the organization. This decision was taken in a meeting. The members of the committee which held this meeting include the likes of Pervez Rathore Abbasi, Israr Abbasi and the Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Ismail Shah.
A spokesperson from PEMRA came out in the open and said, “Under section 13 of the Pemra Act, the authority has decided to withdraw the powers delegated to the chairman and the executive member. The board has unanimously entrusted its confidence in the committee to dispose of work related to the authority.”
The chairman and all other executive members are going to retain their positions.
Earlier during this week the High Court of Islamabad asked the government to explain why they were asking the PEMRA chairman to resign. Notices were sent to different people involved in the matter.
The chairman was recently repositioned after the case of December 29, 2013.
The new chairman for PEMRA has still not been decided. There are at least four to five candidates who might take centre stage after the dismissal of the current PEMRA chairman.
