Pakistan to Sign Cut-Price Gas Deal with Qatar
Thursday, February 6th, 2014 10:15:26 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Islamabad that Pakistan will soon be sending their representatives to Qatar in order to sign a liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal at a discount. The government is hoping that this might sort out the gas supply shortages in the country.
There have been several protests in the country regarding the shortage of gas, not only for transport but also for domestic purposes. Moreover, there have been several power cuts due to lack of fuel.
Pakistan was planning to sign a deal with Iran in order to import gas; however, the US has levied sanctions against them and it is going to be extremely expensive for Pakistan to import gas from there. Now Pakistan will have to rely on a relatively expensive source of LNG in order to get rid of its power problems.
The officials said, “Qatar wants to sell at a market price and Pakistan is looking to get a discount. We expect the deal to be signed this month for an amount of 3.5 million tonnes per year.”
Doha has been supplying gas to other Gulf and Middle Eastern states and now Pakistan will be receiving gas from them as well.
Pakistan is still building a terminal to import LNG.
