US Forces Intensify Operations Ahead of Afghanistan Exit
Wednesday, February 26th, 2014 2:35:21 by Hunain NaseerThe US forces stationed in Afghanistan have reportedly intensified their operations against the Haqqani network to weaken its hold before the forces exit from the country this year.
According to sources, a new Kabul-based unit has been formed by the US government, and is tasked with targeting members of the Haqqani network. The unit is headed by a colonel and includes personnel from special forces, intelligence, military and civilians to improve its efficacy.
“Things are coming together in terms of the more comprehensive approach (against the Haqqanis). So, there’s a lot of focus – there’s a lot of energy behind it right now,” shared a US defense official.
Despite the intensified American operations, the Haqqani network has proved resilient in the past and it remains to be seen whether this strategy will be effective. Moreover, it is not clear yet whether the formation of this unit has led to increased strikes on the network.
The Haqqani network is believed to be behind some of the biggest attacks on US forces during the Afghan war. Incidents like attacks on foreigners, bombing of embassies and truck bombings have been attributed to the Haqqani network, which operates under Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader.
