Musharraf Hearing Postponed Due to Lawyers’ Boycott

Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s treason case hearing, which was scheduled for today, has been postponed due to the absence of lawyers.

Lawyers across Pakistan have boycotted proceedings due to the attack on the Islamabad district court (F-8) yesterday, which left 11 dead, including a judge. In response to the attack, the Pakistan Bar Council had issued a countrywide notice for protests.

According to sources, lawyers for both the prosecution and defense had mutually agreed to excuse themselves from the court hearing after intimating the registrar. The judges of the special court set up for the treason hearing were not in attendance either.

Pervez Musharraf’s treason hearing has been postponed several times now. First there were issues with threats and bombing material found on the route he was set to take to court, and then later on he fell seriously ill and had to be rushed to the hospital.

On account of these issues, he has been missing his hearings, but the special court has been adamant that he must appear before the judges to face the charges against him. The main case against Musharraf is on the basis of his actions against the constitution, making him liable for treason.
