The species, named Potamites erythrocularis, is different from others in its genus on account of irregular scales on the back and undivided frontonasal scales. The females of this new species have also been found to be lacking femoral pores while the males have a distinguishing red ring around their eyes.
The upper forest areas of Kosñipata Valley is where this new species was actually discovered, living at an elevation of over 1,000 meters. The report also revealed that the lizard hunts both day and night during November – April but becomes less nocturnal during May – October. Invertebrates are the common prey for the new species.
This species was discovered in a series of scientific expeditions which have been conducted in the park from 2009 onwards. The scientists involved in the expedition are Alessandro Catenazzi and German Chavez, who also have help from resident biologists and rangers working for the park.
Spread over 15,000KM, Manu National Park is Peru’s largest as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
