Nurses in Lahore sit-in divided into two groups after midnight
Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 3:35:21 by Hunain NaseerAccording to Geo News, the nurses who had arranged a sit-in protest in Lahore were split into two groups at midnight. One group wanted to end the sit-in at midnight while the other was not willing to get up until their demands were agreed upon.
The nurses, protesting together under the Young Nurses Association (YNA), took out a rally from Club Chowk to Egerton Road against the government’s ‘anti-nursing policies’.
After the call for the sit-in was made, nurses in all public hospitals of Lahore boycotted and refused to serve other than in the emergency wards. They all gathered at Club Road to march against the government’s policy of removing nurses from jobs and not regularizing their duties.
The protest carried on despite the rain as nurses carried banners and posters with their demands. Their march also led to traffic blockage, causing inconvenience to motorists and a police contingent was called in to provide security for the duration of the protest.
The main issues raised by the nurses in the protest were the delaying of their demands from Punjab Health Department and no assurance for regularization. According to them, there is no job security for nurses who work on contracts.
The boycott also affected the proper functioning of hospitals but nurses in emergency wards fulfilled their duties.
