Brazil Beckons for Pakistani Street Kid Footballers
Tuesday, March 25th, 2014 8:37:04 by Ahmad MehdiIt was a life-changing moment for the sixteen-year-old Mohammad Salman, who thought that he is always going to remain on the streets of Karachi after he decided to flee from home three years ago.
Addicted to drugs and begging for survival, Mohammad Salman decided to run away from his home at the age of 13. Now, after three years, he is getting ready to represent Pakistan in the second edition of the Street Child World Cup, which is going to take place in Brazil this week.
While addressing the press, Salman spoke about his life and how the World Cup has changed it altogether. He said, “In my past life I was like a street urchin, using drugs, running away from school and studies. I was an addict. We didn´t know what we were doing and what we should do. I was staying away from home. They helped develop my interest in football and I´m excited to be part of the Street Child World Cup.”
A non-profit body from Britain urged FIFA to start a Street Child World Cup back in the year 2010. The first edition took place in South Africa, ahead of the actual FIFA World Cup which took place in 2010. India won the inaugural event, which managed to become so successful that FIFA decided to hold it again after four years.
