Pakistan Signs Agreement with India to Purchase Electricity
Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 12:29:55 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Lahore that Pakistan has reached an agreement with India where they will be purchasing electricity from their neighbouring country.
Federal Minister for Commerce and Textile, Khurram Dastgir, came out in the open and spoke to the press regarding the matter. He stated that the Pakistani and Indian government have agreed that Pakistan will be receiving electricity from India.
For now the trade talks have been put on hold since India is experiencing an election. Once a final government is selected, Pakistan is going to resume its trade talks with them.
Pakistan is currently going through a severe energy crisis. The problem started during the time General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf took over the government after implementing Marshal Law.
Things haven’t improved in the energy sector for Pakistan. This is why they have been asking different countries for electricity as they are now planning to import it. Different agreements have been reached with different countries but the most recent one took place with India.
This has come down as a surprise also because India and Pakistan, despite being neighbours, are not really considered to be allies. It’s since the time Pakistan decided to separate itself from the Indo-Pak region (subcontinent).
Both the countries will now work on the infrastructure of the project.
