According to the latest reports from Kabul, the headquarters of the Afghan Election Commission were attacked by insurgents today, Saturday.

The attack, confirmed by an official, has come just one week before voting in the country and follows a number of bloody attacks in Kabul.

“I can confirm an attack at the IEC (Independent Election Commission) headquarters,” said Noor Mohammad Noor, the spokesman for the IEC.

“We heard two explosions inside the IEC compound, the sound of firing is still ongoing, but people are safe and are in (reinforced) safe rooms,” he shared.

The Interior ministry’s spokesperson, Sediq Sediqqi has shared that there are three or four militants who have taken hold of a building and are firing at the IEC building.

“Initial information shows that three or four attackers have occupied a building and are firing on the IEC office,” he said.

Just yesterday, Taliban militants assaulted a guesthouse in the capital of Afghanistan and killed two people. The guesthouse was used by a US charity working against the landmines in the country. The attack on Friday was the fourth major assault in Kabul this year which targeted foreigners.

The Taliban forces in the region intend to disrupt the elections, which are to be held on April 5.
