UN seeking compliance with International Law on issue of Drone attacks
Saturday, March 29th, 2014 5:23:41 by Hunain NaseerThe United Nations (UN) asked all states on Friday to make sure that the use of armed drones falls in compliance with principles of International law. The original proposal behind the call was made by Pakistan, believed to be aimed at US drone attacks in the country.
The resolution forwarded by Pakistan was made on behalf of other countries as well, including Yemen and Switzerland. No particular state was named in the proposal and Pakistan’s ambassador made it clear the purpose of this resolution is to stand for a principle.
However, the US is known to be the biggest drone user, especially when it comes to conflicts in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia. Pakistan itself has raised its voice many times over the violation of supremacy by unsanctioned US drone attacks in the northern region.
Sharing the US perspective on the issue, the deputy assistant secretary of state, Paula Schriefer said, “The United States is committed to ensuring that our actions, including those involving remotely piloted aircraft, are undertaken in accordance with all applicable domestic and international law and with the greatest possible transparency, consistent with our national security needs”.
The resolution was adopted with 27 states in favor, six against and 14 abstentions at the Geneva forum.
