Rashid Latif says Pakistan’s reliance on senior players backfired in the World T20
Thursday, April 3rd, 2014 2:37:06 by Hunain NaseerFormer captain and the new chief selector of Pakistan cricket, Rashid Latif, commented on Pakistan’s exit from the World T20 and cited the team’s reliance on senior players as a major stumbling block.
Having been shown the door by West Indies in their last match on Tuesday, the Pakistan team returned home to severe criticism and public disappointed.
The shortest format of the game is well suited to the flamboyant Green Shirts and people expect a lot from them, given how they won the 2009 edition of the World T20. However, their last match against West Indies saw them crash and burn, losing the game by 84 runs.
According to Latif, who was appointed on Tuesday as well, the decline in performance is the result of ignoring new talent and overreliance on senior players.
“Just like Australia failed in their plans of selecting senior players, Pakistan also fumbled because of selecting senior players,” said Latif, who was also captain of the Pakistan team.
While Latif did not name any players, but speculations are rife regarding current wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and all-rounder Shoaib Malik.
The keeper only managed to score 48 runs in four innings and was not spectacular behind the stumps either. Malik on the other hand, was able to score a total of 52 runs in the tournament.
