Monday, April 7th, 2014 2:13:22 by Hunain NaseerSri Lanka defeated India by six wickets to win their first ever World T20 title, despite having reached the finals three times previously.
Batting second, the Lankan Lions were chasing a total of 131, and managed to reach it in 17.5 overs. Thisara Perera sealed the game and the cup for his team in the end, hitting a six to rack up a total of 23 runs from just 14 balls.
On the other end, Kumar Sangakkara was the man whose 8th T20 fifty guaranteed a win for the Lankan Lions. The former captain scored an unbeaten 52 from just 35 balls, including six boundaries and six.
Incidentally, the win marked the last T20 game for both Sangakkara and veteran Mahela Jayawardene, both of whom have long served Sri Lankan cricket. However, both players will continue to feature in Test and One Day games for the side.
From the Indian side, the young Virat Kohli played a good knock, creating partnerships with Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh. However, both his teammates were eventually dismissed and India could only post a modest 130 run total on the board.
Kumar Sangakkara was named player of the match, while Virat Kholi bagged the player of the series award.
