London ‘ recruits ‘ mothers to discourage their children jihadists
Friday, April 25th, 2014 9:00:46 by Abdul Basit AbbasiThe heads of the British anti-terrorist forces have made an unprecedented appeal to women of the Muslim community to discourage their husbands and children to travel to Syria as jihadi fighters. The launch of a national campaign calling for the intervention of the women responding to the concerns of the Government to the growing number of British citizens who have joined the fight against the regime of Bashar Assad.
The campaign, centered mainly in the cities of London, Birmingham and Manchester, is a change of tone in the strategy of the police, so far focused on the threat of arrest, and even filing charges – those British Muslims intercepted on his return from Syria. Forty people have been arrested so far this year in those circumstances, a figure that doubles the total in 2013. They are some of those who returned from the hundreds, according to estimates by the authorities, have moved from the United Kingdom to the Arab country. Other European countries have initiated various programs to prevent their young Muslims to join the Syrian war.
David Cameron ‘s government is aware of the death of at least twenty of these men in the conflict, including Abdul Waheed Majeed, a father of three who became the first British responsible for a suicide bombing in Syria, and Brighton teenager whose name has not been released.
From today, officers from the anti-terrorism unit of the police and officials working in the prevention of extremism organized meetings with representatives of the women of the Muslim community to seek the cooperation of mothers, wives and sisters. ” We want to ensure that families worried about their loved ones, and especially women, receive sufficient information about what they can do to prevent these trips that enroll mostly young men,” stressed the national project coordinator Helen Ball.
Most Muslim families in the UK do not want their children to move to Syria to participate in that war but, even if they know their plans, many are reluctant to go to the police for fear of being catalog as potential terrorists.
