Local Tyre Smuggling Hits New Record
Tuesday, April 29th, 2014 12:41:25 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Karachi that tyre smuggling has touched a record high as approximately 250 trucks loaded with tyres come across the Pak-Afghan border on a daily basis.
Sources claim that the border takes up approximately 1 – 1.5% of the total value of goods which are loaded on the truck. This, in return, causes a loss of approximately Rs 25million in revenues due to the fact that at least 2.5 million tyres are smuggled from Chaman and Landi Kotal borders.
While talking about how this affects the Pakistani industry, it was stated that smugglers bring in vehicle and truck tyres from Afghanistan which cost a lot less to the locals of the country.
Now the domestic industry is demanding from the Federal Board of Revenue to take extreme measures in order to eradicate this problem once and for all. They claim that these smugglers are easily selling cheaper tyres in major cities of the country and this should not be allowed as it takes away the market of the people who are selling non-smuggled tyres.
A recent stat revealed that 20% of total tyre demand is met by the local manufacturers. Approximately 48% of the tyres are imported while 32% of them are smuggled.

The only way to crub smuggling is the fiscal measure. By no mean, Government official is willing to stop smuggling, as they are getting their due share from this illegal trade.
Once, Sales Tax on both Local manufacturers of Tyres & Legal Importers is reduced to single digit, smuggling will be automatically reduced, hence Government will not lose a single penny of revenue because legal trade will be increase. As far as local manufacturers are concern, their price will be reduce due to reduction in Sales Tax.
This is the only way in which both Legal Business Group can be survive, otherwise first legal importer will be vanished and secondly Local Manufacturer business will be vanished from replacement market.
