Violating Red Traffic Signal is a Major Sin, Says Saudi Grand Mufti
Wednesday, April 30th, 2014 4:43:36 by News Pakistan AdminViolating the red traffic signal light is a major sin and haraam as declared in a fatawa by Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Shaikh according to Al Arabiya News Channel. This might help the Saudi drivers to stop at the red light and minimize the potentially fatal accidents causing about 17 deaths everyday. He had, in another fatawa, any driver causing death in a road accident resulting from traffic law violation is guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Shaikh’s latest fatawa is based on the Quranic verse 5:32 which states “whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” The Grand Mufti said that any such a violation of traffic law including violating a red traffic signal is a “major sin”.
According to media reports there are an average 17 fatalities daily in Saudi Arabia which is one of the highest in the world. Another report by the kingdom’s General Directorate of Traffic demonstrated that almost a third of traffic accidents in Saudi capital Riyadh in 2010 were direct result of drivers violating traffic signals.
The Grand Mufti had issued a similar fatawa in 2010. He said that the person who caused the death of another person by violating the traffic laws is guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
