Cotton Harvesting Delayed by a Month
Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 2:09:08 by Ahmad MehdiIt was recently reported from Karachi that cotton harvesting is going to be delayed for a month as the farmers who began to sow late in April are still engaged in planting the seeds.
A report read, “The sowing, which was supposed to begin in the end of February and/or beginning of March, actually started late in April. The harvesting may be delayed beyond one month if it rains harsh in June and July. The sowing process, which was to be completed by end of May, will finish now by the end of June. Farmers in the province also started late sowing.
They further spoke about how it has been working out for them so far, “The winter was good for wheat but bad for cotton. Therefore, farmers decided to delay wheat harvesting by about 10 to 15 days. Farmers are expected to sow cotton at 7.2 acre to 7.4 acre of land in the new season. Farmers are short of the capital due to delay in wheat harvesting. They are yet to sell stock of wheat and/or receive payment against delivery of the grain to traders.”
While talking about the price of cotton and how the companies are selling it, a spokesperson said, Companies are selling Bt cotton seeds under three different names: MNH886, FH142 and IUB222.”
