UN Mediator for Syrian Conflict Announces Resignation
Thursday, May 15th, 2014 7:48:13 by Khalil KhanAfter nearly two years trying to gather opposition and Syrian regime in a dialogue, the UN mediator for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, barely managed one week ceasefire in Homs last February, and two rounds of negotiations Geneva (January and February 2014). Without thereby achieve greater results to curb the violent clashes that have left according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights 150,000 dead.
The resignation of Algerian diplomat will become effective on 31 May, three days before the date set for Syrian elections. Since last March, Brahimi hinted that presidential elections held in Syria as Bashar al-Assad candidate dialogue between opposition and regime as well as efforts in Geneva would dissipate no chance of repeating in Geneva III.
Opposition and regime have been entrenched in their positions. The opposition refuses any dialogue with the regime of Bashar Assad if he presented his candidacy in presidential elections. The Syrian regime has reaffirmed that the transition would be led by President Bashar Assad that comes to elections next month along with three other candidates harboring little chance of winning.
An impasse has exhausted all the tricks of the UN mediator, that despite the media symbolism reached with Geneva I and II, few higher expectations accorded to its mission. On the one hand, the mediator has dealt with a divided opposition determined to show a semblance of union has been unable to impose any control on the ground. Furthermore, the Syrian regime supported by Russia to the Council of the United Nations Security has persisted in its role as the sole legitimate interlocutor.
Brahimi ‘s resignation comes at a favorable situation for the Syrian regime has made in recent months entrench military control over the major Syrian cities and strategic roads while the rebel side has been relegated to the borders with neighboring countries or reduced insurgent bags in peripheral regions. The elections on June 3 predict a victory for Bashar Assad.
Karim Makdisi, associate professor of political science at the American University of Beirut is pessimistic: ” The resignation highlights the failure by one side in a political mediation by the United Nations following the abandonment of two figures as Kofi Anan weight Lakhdar Brahimi and will be forced to resort to a figure lower profile. On the other hand, the failure of the Saudi plan for the region as before the strike against Iran. Political mediation loses strength and shows disinterest U.S. absorbed Ukraine stands out as the number one priority today. “
For his part, Dr. Najib Ghadbian, Special Representative of the Syrian National Council at the United Nations appear lauding the efforts of Brahimi while criticizing the lack of commitment of the international community and claimed that “The Coalition Syria discuss possible options for inflict more pressure on the regime with key allies in the next ministerial meeting on May 15 of the eleven countries ‘ Core group’ Friends of Syria “.
