Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Water and Power, Khawaja Asif made a statement regarding the state of load shedding in the country today, and shared that the menace is unlikely to end this year.

According to the minister, the country is currently suffering from a loss of Rs. 1,000 billion annually on account of power generation issues. He further shared that the provincial governments had huge defaults, the biggest in Sindh (Rs. 53 billion), which need to be cleared before power generation can reach full capacity.

It is expected that the governments of Punjab, KPK and Balochistan will be able to clear their dues this year, which will reduce the frequency of power outages in the country. However, the dues on Sindh and Azad Kashmir continue to mount and their defaults will be harder to clear.

Load shedding is one of the biggest issues in the country and has been dragged on from one government to another. It is believed that rampant corruption, dated technology and short-term policy making are the causes behind this problem, and it has reached a stage where eradicating it will require considerable time, effort and funds.

Not only do industries suffer from these outages but domestic consumers are also frustrated with frequent load shedding, especially during the hot summers in the country.

Khawaja Asif also shared that the provincial governments have been ordered to ensure that markets close down early and power is saved.
